Ping google.com: Troubleshoot Audio Issues by Running a Ping Test

Ping google.com to check whether your Internet connection is connected and working. With this test, we can troubleshoot audio issues on your basic talk home phone service. It primarily checks the time taken to send and receive packet data. Audio issues on your phone may due to several reasons. If you have checked other related issues, we need to troubleshoot this issue by elimination method.

Here we will perform the test with google.com. Pinging google service the best option because it is a public website and also runs without any down-time.  The command will be ping www.google.com. You can also check with any websites or using their IP address. The websites you are about to use must be a working site.

Steps to Run a Ping Test 

You can run ping test on your PC | Laptop | Computer that is connected to internet. The steps below will help you.

PC/Computer/Laptop with Windows OS (Operating System): If you are running windows OS computer, the steps below will help you. We have provided below the steps for windows XP, Windows Vista, windows 7, windows 8 and windows 10. There will be only few variations on these versions.

Steps to Run Ping Test on Windows Operating System:

Windows 10:

1. Click the magnifying glass icon on the left side bottom and type "CMD" and hit enter button on your keyboard.
2. In the best match search results, select the app named "Command Prompt"
3. A black background with white text and blinking cursor will pop up. This is called command prompt.
4. Here type the format "Ping" "Space" "-l 600" "-n 100" "website address" and hit enter. It will look like Ping -l 600 -n 100 google.com
5. Wait for the test results to display.

Note: In the above example, -l 600 means the number of bytes we are testing. -n 100 means number of times we are pinging. This commands will ping google.com 100 times with 600 bytes of data.

Windows 8:

1. Place the cursor on the right hand side corner of the screen. You will get charm bar. Click on search.
2. Search "CMD" in the search bar and hit enter. 
3. Click on the result with the cmd box and the command prompt will appear.
4. Here type the format "Ping" "Space" "-l 600" "-n 100" "site address" and hit enter. It will look like Ping -l 600 -n 100 www.google.com
5. Wait for the test results to display if the site is successfully pinged.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista:

1. Open the start menu by clicking on the windows logo button on the left side bottom.
2. Type "CMD" in the box and hit enter on your computer.
3. The command prompt will open.
4. Here type the format "Ping" "Space" "-l 600" "-n 100" "web address" and hit enter. It will look like Ping -l 600 -n 100 google.com
5. Wait for the test results to display. Will appear only when pinged successfully.

Windows XP:

1. Click on the start button and then select Run option.
2. Enter the command "cmd" and hit enter on your keyboard.
3. The command prompt will appear.
4. Here type the format "Ping" "Space" "-l 600" "-n 100" "website address" and hit enter. It will look like Ping -l 600 -n 100 google.com
5. Wait for the test results to display.

Steps to Run Ping Test on Mac OS

1. On your mac computer, hit the Toolbar and click Go.
2. Select the Utilities folder from the options
3. Double-click the Terminal icon.
4. Type ping -s 600 -c 100 followed by an google.com.
5. For example: ping -s 600 -c 100 google.com.
6. Press Enter to get the pinged results.

Reading and Understanding the Ping Results:

The ping results for both Mac and Windows will be the same. We need to look at the factors like request timed out. If there is more occurrences of request timed out, then the issue is related to your Internet connection. It is possible that you may not be connected to internet. To troubleshot further, you need to run "Trace Route Command"

After running the above test results, you can send them to others by copying and pasting them on a ms word or paint application.
